Hi! I’m Lara, and I’m SO glad you’re here! My purpose here is to provide value to you, the entrepreneur or those who aspire to be online entrepreneurs. But you want to know the truth? I never imagined I would be doing this!
I have always had a love of learning and creating. A tom boy from the beginning, I preferred to spend hours with my dad and grandpa in their workshop fixing engines, burning designs in wood with the cutting torch (my mom didn’t know!), and making mud pies. I learned very quickly and made straight A’s all through school, so family started asking me what I wanted to be when I grew up and where I wanted to go to college. I would be the first person in my family to attend university, so it was a big deal. I thought that following that path would open the doors to my American dream.
I attended Texas A&M University with the President’s Endowed Scholarship and a declared major of aerospace engineering. I was in nerd heaven! But I quickly learned that as an engineer, I would most likely spend my career in a cubicle working on mundane problems assigned to me. That future did not sit well with my independent and creative side. What I did love and excited me was the physics that I was studying. I saw that physics was the most fundamental of all sciences, and rather than just observing and classifying, physics actually dug deep into the “why” of things. I was hooked!
I changed majors, worked harder than I ever had in my life, and graduated with a degree in physics in 1997. I went on to do research through the department of chemical engineering on topics in nanotechnology including colloidal crystal formation as a development of light based computing technology. As bills came due and I anticipated the prospect of a family, I focused on a teaching career. I taught Advanced Placement Physics and Astronomy to some amazingly bright and dear students for 12 years. Teaching was a work of heart that was emotionally rewarding yet physically and financially draining. The myth of 8-3 work days was soon dispelled as I found myself working 60+ hours per week for pay that averaged less than $3 per hour.
After a divorce and remarrying, I was able to stay home and be a full time mom while having my second, third, and fourth babies. I was immersed in my duties as mom and homesteading queen, but there was a part of me that still felt like I had something to contribute on a larger scale. A health crisis with my second child led me to the network marketing company that is now my primary business. I had prior experience shopping with a few network marketing companies, and I even tried to build a business with one with little lasting success. The retention rate was dismal, and I felt like I was spinning my wheels so I really wasn’t interested in the business opportunity of my current company for a couple of years after I was introduced to them. I am a talker, so as I naturally shared my experiences with the products that had impacted our family so profoundly, I found many friends and family members wanted to products at the discount so they enrolled under me. I was suddenly supporting and educating a growing group of people who were purchasing the products without knowledge of the opportunity.
My husband meanwhile was working rotating 12 hour shifts at a major oil refinery along the Texas Gulf Coast. His income was significant and we were able to live comfortably on one salary, but with very little warning the union staged a walk out strike. All hourly employees, union members or not, were locked out of the plant. The strike lingered on and after 3 months, most of our rainy day savings was gone. We turned off utilities and moved in with my parents. My “little checks” coming in from my network marketing company were large enough that they covered the mortgage on our home while we had zero other income! We did not lose our home because of the residual income coming in from my casual sharing! Suddenly the lights came on, and I began to think about what could be possible if I started sharing my products and opportunity more intentionally.
I began holding home meetings, and researching online the best ways to grow a network marketing business. I received encouragement and support from my upline but found little in the way of training. That didn’t stop me, and I soon reached leadership ranks in my company. Honestly, I grew so quickly because the products are truly amazing. My skillset was not one that included business skills, and that caused me to make a lot of mistakes along the way. But still, I enjoyed success.
My husband wanted to support my efforts and had some experience with websites and SEO, so he created a WordPress blog for me. I began blogging and getting traffic. My blog was getting me 15-20 enrollments per month when the FDA sent letters to several health and wellness companies citing reps who were making medical claims. My company insisted that all reps with websites take them down, so we did. I was crushed. I had worked through my warm market list, and my website was bringing me new people to talk to. I was so upset by the development that I stopped building for months. I seriously considered quitting, but I had seen it work and I was determined that it would work for me. I wanted the financial and time freedom that working from home offered.
I switched to Social Media and got overwhelmed. There was so much! I needed streamlined training and wasn’t finding any. I hopped from topic to topic and tried lots of things with limited success until I found 3 key training platforms that I now use for each aspect of my business growth and development. I have a private Facebook group for my network marketing product users to support and educate them. I now have training that I use with my team to grow their business in the traditional offline manner and training to grow their business online the right way. These 3 areas are making an incredible difference, and I just can’t seem to bring people on fast enough.
