The first tip is something that I learned long ago as a mother of small children. The brain at any age ignores negative commands like “don’t”, “stop”, or “never”. This is very obvious when you are dealing with a small child. Ever see a toddler with a heavy object and yell, “Don’t throw that at your brother!” They immediately throw the object at their brother! Their brain ignored the “don’t” and focused on the command that they heard: “throw that at your brother!” Inexperienced parents often get frustrated and mistakenly think that the child is being willfully disobedient when the opposite is true. They are doing what their brain thinks they have been told to do. A simple way of correcting the behavior of young children and of getting adults to do what you want them to do is to tell them what you want them TO do. For example, a better way to deal with the toddler might be to say, “Put the toy down and roll the ball to your brother.” Correct and redirect the behavior. It’s easy and effective! Emphasize Feelings and Actions
Bad copy is easy to find. Simply look in the promotions folder of your email to find tons of examples of marketers telling you not to use their products or services unintentionally. Another thing you may be doing with the best intentions is using text formatting such as Color, Bold, Italicise, Underline, or ALL CAPS in a distracting and ineffective way. These text formatting options are powerful but need to be used intentionally to emphasize only FEELINGS and COMMANDS in your copy.
Facts tell, and stories sell. This is a marketing truth that you are probably familiar with. This is because stories elicit emotions, and purchases are decisions based on emotion. Combining the strategy of telling your audience how to feel and telling them what to do will make your copy dangerously compelling!
